Once the grip is where we want it on all equipment we add commands for pre-bite alerts and the bite itself. My preference is adding the command once the dog is competent in biting their final bit of equipment (suit or sleeve depending on sport etc)

As the grip technique may differ when transitioning to more advanced pieces of equipment.

Small tip for improving your loose leash walk. I’m all for giving a dog a structured sniff break once they have earned it.

But

When you are trying to get from A to B you’re in charge of that walk, don’t let your dog think that they’re in charge. Especially with powerful breeds.

Being able to recall your dog away from pursuing something is an essential skill to teach them.

It could be lifesaving to them, other dogs, other people and wildlife.

It is a separate skill to a recall despite being under the same command.

It’s the same as teaching a sit and a sit stay, same command, different skill.

How we determine what tools to use for a dog involved a combination of different factors.

Now all dogs can be conditioned to leash pressure on a flat collar or a slip leash/grot, but when the dog is highly aroused by prey or becoming reactive from a stimulus, you need the right tool to communicate with them in that moment.

Overtime I do believe in ‘downgrading’ your tools when your dog is at a certain level. What I mean by this is once a tool overtime has been used to show what behaviours are acceptable and unacceptable you can start to use less aversive tools due to your dog knowing how to behave.

Our personal dog became really reactive from dog bites (no fault from him). We fixed his reactivity with a prong and slip. He now spends his life on a flat collar with an ecollar for off-leash and only use the prong here and there for coffees and restaurants where playing with a remote would be annoying.

Boogeyman’s are also key when introducing real life scenarios. If real life scenarios aren’t introduced properly you can easily break a dog.

My preference is that unless I see that a dog has clear prey drive I don’t immediately assess this first. Doing this can scare a dog if it’s on the nervy side and in defence. We all love a dog tearing up the floor to get to the object but slow and steady wins.
